Why anamorphic? Big-budget Hollywood productions utilize anamorphic lenses to achieve the cinematic widescreen perspective. With a 16:9 sensor, this yields an aspect ratio of 2.4:1. Rather than cropping the image at the top and bottom, which results in resolution loss, anamorphic lenses distort the image towards the edges.
