Blackmagic Design Unveils URSA Cine Immersive Camera for Vision Pro Spacial Videos

During Apple’s WWDC 2024 keynote, the company announced a new camera Blackmagic Design is currently working on: the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive. This camera will be one of the first to produce Apple Immersive Video content for the Apple Vision Pro. Alongside this, new updates for DaVinci Resolve will be released to make it the “world’s first Immersive Video Editor.” Let’s take a closer look at the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive!

Apple vision pro

The Apple Vision Pro virtual reality headset, announced in June 2023 and released in February 2024, set the stage for a new era of high-resolution immersive experiences. However, creating content for Apple’s high-resolution immersive goggles has been a challenge, with required resolutions around 14K/100MP. Blackmagic Design has stepped up to this challenge, developing the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive in collaboration with Apple.

Unveiling the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive

At the time of writing, the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive has been announced, but detailed specifications are still limited. The camera is based on the latest URSA Cine platform, ensuring similar input, output, and connectivity features as its predecessors. However, the immersive version is tailored for high-resolution VR content, essential for the Apple Vision Pro.

The URSA Cine Immersive will have a fixed lens

We cannot confirm whether the URSA Cine Immersive is derived from the URSA Cine Full-Frame 12K model or the URSA Cine 65mm 17K model. However, Blackmagic Design indicates that the camera sensor is capable of capturing 8K stereoscopic 3D footage with a resolution of “8160 x 7200 per eye with pixel-level synchronization,” achieving an impressive maximum framerate of 90fps in stereoscopic mode.

The URSA Cine Immersive will feature a “fixed, custom lens system” specifically designed and calibrated for the camera. The footage will be captured in a new Blackmagic RAW Immersive with up to 16 stops of dynamic range.

DaVinci Resolve Update for the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive

To complement the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive, DaVinci Resolve will receive significant updates to support the new Blackmagic RAW Immersive file format. This includes an Immersive Video Viewer for panning, tilting, and rolling clips on 2D monitors and direct viewing and monitoring on an Apple Vision Pro headset. Additionally, the updates will allow transitions rendered by Vision Pro to be bypassed using XML metadata, providing clean master files for editors.
