Why anamorphic? Big-budget Hollywood productions utilize anamorphic lenses to achieve the cinematic widescreen perspective. With a 16:9 sensor, this yields an aspect ratio of 2.4:1. Instead of cropping the image at the top and bottom, which results in resolution loss, anamorphic lenses distort the image towards the edges. Subsequently, during viewing or projection, a corresponding equalization occurs.

Lens properties such as oval bokeh, horizontal flare, and shallower depth of field are considered highly aesthetic by many filmmakers and are becoming increasingly popular. The Laowa Nanomorph lenses are the smallest anamorphic lenses for S35 cameras, featuring a constant compression factor of 1.5 at all focus points. The “Nano” designation signifies their extremely compact and lightweight design, while “Morph” denotes their anamorphic capabilities.

Anamorphic lenses consist of spherical and cylindrical elements. Crafting professional-grade anamorphic lenses typically entails significant effort in optical design, resulting in high costs and cumbersome, heavy formats.
