Why anamorphic? Big-budget Hollywood productions utilize anamorphic lenses to achieve the cinematic widescreen perspective. With a 16:9 sensor, this yields an aspect ratio of 2.4:1. Instead of cropping the image at the top and bottom, which results in resolution loss, anamorphic lenses distort the image towards the edges. Subsequently, during viewing or projection, a corresponding equalization occurs.

Lens properties such as oval bokeh, horizontal flare, and shallower depth of field are considered highly aesthetic by many filmmakers and are becoming increasingly popular. The Laowa Nanomorph lenses are the smallest anamorphic lenses for S35 cameras, featuring a constant compression factor of 1.5 at all focus points. The “Nano” designation signifies their extremely compact and lightweight design, while “Morph” denotes their anamorphic capabilities.

Anamorphic lenses consist of spherical and cylindrical elements. Crafting professional-grade anamorphic lenses typically entails significant effort in optical design, resulting in high costs and cumbersome, heavy formats. This is why Laowa developed its unique patented anamorphic design, ensuring consistent optical quality and a consistent compression factor.

Revolutionary in their lightness and compactness, Nanomorph lenses make handheld shooting and working with various camera support systems such as gimbals, tripods, sliders, or camera booms much easier. They are even suitable for drone usage. The minimum focusing distance has been further shortened compared to similar lenses, enabling even more impressive close-ups.

Filmmakers find it practical and easy to use screw-in filters directly on the filter thread. Additionally, all Nanomorph Cine lenses feature continuously variable aperture and focus rings equipped with standardized Module 0.8 tooth rings.
